ECMO, or extracorporeal membrane pulmonary oxygenation, is a life-support technique that uses a special artificial device to draw blood out of the heart, exchange it for gas, adjust its temperature and filter it back into the arteries of the body. ECMO is currently the most central form of support for severe cardiopulmonary failure and has been described as the "last resort" for patients with severe neocoronary pneumonia.

The basic devices of the artificial heart-lung machine include
(1) Blood pump: The main component for driving the unidirectional flow of oxygenated blood outside the body and back into the arteries of the body, replacing the blood displacement function of the heart.
(2) Oxygenated blood unidirectional flow device.
(3) Oxygenator: Oxygenates venous blood, expels carbon dioxide and replaces the lungs for gas exchange.
(4) Thermostat: A device that uses circulating water temperature with a thin metal isolator for thermal conductivity to lower or raise the temperature of the blood. It may exist as a separate component, but is mostly integrated with the oxygenator.
(5) Filter: A device consisting of a microporous polymeric material filter, placed in the arterial blood supply circuit, used to effectively filter out micro-thrombi formed by blood components or gases, etc.
